As much as beach sand, a cocktail and the sea breeze are amazing, there is something to be said about a cosy winter getaway! A few weeks ago, I experienced exactly that at Kloofzicht Lodge and Spa.

My mom came up from Cape Town, and we surprised my Gran with a night away with the girls for Mothers Day! My mom left me with the task of sourcing somewhere suitable, and after trawling through Booking.com, Kloofzicht appeared to be the right choice after seeing some amazing pictures.

I booked us a family room (bonding time), and hoped that it wouldn’t be a case of heavy Photoshopping…only to be faced with disappointment upon arrival.

The verdict? Most definitely the exact opposite! Kloofzicht is absolutely stunning; set on a small nature reserve home to a number of animals as well as bird life, the lodge overlooks six exquisite fly-fishing dams. It is quite literally nestled at the foothills of the Zwartkop Mountains in the Cradle of Humankind, and the best part – it is 40 mins away from JHB.

From the moment we drove into the venue (after hours of my GPS getting things horribly wrong) we felt a complete sense of calm and tranquility, which lasted our whole stay.

We checked in to our family room – huge by the way – and took a scenic walk around the dams. I can’t describe how amazing it was to hear the sound of trout jumping out of the water with everything else being so quiet – it was an experience that genuinely felt good for the soul.

Indoor and outdoor shower – amazing!

We opted for the set tasting menu for dinner and I am soooo glad we did! Everything was delicious – the presentation was stunning, and I actually overheard that the chef previously worked at Roots Restaurant at the Forum Homini Hotel (which I have heard fantastic reviews about) so it should give you an idea of the quality. At R290 pp, I felt that we got extremely good value.

The fact that the service was EXCELLENT certainly helped too – I have to make mention of all the staff at the venue – they really were exceptional, and something you don’t often see!

Much like we did for our Kievits Kroon stay, I need to give Kloofzicht a rating on the ‘Spruce O’ Meter’:

  • Ambiance: 8.5/10
  • Service: 9/10
  • Cleanliness: 8/10

My overall score for the venue is 8.5/10, which is a clear indication that it is worth a visit.

It especially seems ideal in the winter months; fireplaces in each of the rooms, warm beds and red wine. They are running some winter specials, both for the venue and the spa (sadly we didn’t have enough time to try) – have a look at their website for more info.
