The trend on the blog, currently, seems to be about the “Gems of Jozi”. Lately, there have been a multitude of new and exciting restaurants opening around the city, great little fashion finds and cool places to hang out at on long summer days. But when Jo’burgers aren’t eating, shopping or drinking, we need somewhere for downtime and this past weekend I re-discovered one of the best spas in town!

I have actually been to the spa at the Saxon Hotel quite a few times in the past two years but have never really thought it was worth blogging about… the massages have always been fantastic but the décor of the spa seemed dated. The African theme of the spa was fitting (especially considering how many international visitors the hotel attracts) but was showing its age – a good 20-something years in my opinion.

The spa is now “Afro-chic” – the use of warm coppers and rose gold accentuate neutral greys and browns; the spa feels even more upmarket and luxe than before! The treatment rooms at the Spa have always been fabulous, but the addition of these magnificent chandeliers have upped the style stakes!

The facilities of the spa include a floatation pool, indoor pool, outdoor pool, steam rooms, separate manicure bar and pedicure lounge a fabulous hair bar (I spied Moroccan Oil products!). After my un-be-lieeeeeevable 90 minute Aromatherapy massage, we relaxed for a few minutes in the indoor pool (as the rain slowly beat down outside). If we had not had to get back to a small baby, I think the staff may have needed to drag me out at closing time!

The prices of treatments at the spa are premium priced – you can check out the treatment menu and price list here – so it is the type of place to frequent for a special spoil or event, but it is really worth it if one makes proper use of all the incredible facilities at the spa!

The grounds of the hotel, too, are a real gem! It is crazy to think the heart of the country’s economic hub and traffic is mere 5km’s away.. Large, lush gardens and a lake-looking infinity pool make it seem one has left the city. Sean and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary last month with a night away here (including dinner at the ridiculously good LDRS) and returned home refreshed, as if we had escaped the city for the night.
