We are already halfway through the 7th month of 2017, and unfortunately this is only about the 3rd blog post this year! I am however writing it from an entirely new city; the intimidatingly cool city of Cape Town and the city which I refer to as my now-home. (Home for how long? I don’t know yet!)
It has quite literally been a whirlwind of a year so far; one tend’s to say this every year but this time it’s just gone up a notch (or 12!).
In short, in a little over a year, Steph and myself have gone from having two corporate jobs and a life in Johannesburg, to us packing up our essentials into a few boxes (including dogs – no, not in the boxes!), moving to Cape Town – sans jobs – to start a new adventure and build up a brand new idea from nothing.
The idea was Steph’s vision and brainchild; a new take on an old-school barbershop in the heart of Cape Town’s city bowl. This will not be the only time you hear about the barber shop – HERMANOS – from me, so I won’t go into too much detail now but the bottom line is this:
- we are now in Cape Town for an indefinite period of time
- it’s scary, overwhelming, stressful and intimidating
- even more then the feelings above, it is unbelievably exciting
- we have left the majority of our friends behind
- we now have sunsets to boast about
- we have a lot of exploring to do
That is a long story very short, but to fill in all the gaps will leave me writing for days. Inevitably, these gaps will be filled with details over time, but for now I wanted to give some context to a) the extended blog silence and b) the future social media posts that will be split across JHB and CT.
Sam and myself have been laying low the last few months; we have been trying to manage the chaos – good chaos – that this year has brought to the table. Sam is obviously rocking at being super-mom (I sometimes look at her and think – how chick? How?) but with all this going on, Spruce has been impacted. We are going to try our best to revive it again – and it might not be as constant as last year but this is something that we both love doing so it most definitely is not the last you will hear from us.
I am still continuing with Flat White Designs – thankfully I can work from anywhere – but my focus is now two-fold; every conceivable amount of effort will also go towards trying to make Hermanos a success. If you are interested in the process and progress of the shop, feel free to follow our Instagram and Facebook accounts – any support is warmly welcomed.
There is an old saying that goes something like “may you live in interesting times”. Well – yes, that is pretty spot-on when describing things at the moment. Life is certainly not boring nor stagnant and I am really optimistic about what the future holds. We have so much support and backing, which we are so thankful for.
Here are some snippets of our first few weeks in Cape Town – be prepared to see a lot more once we’ve found our feet and settled in.

Happy Friday! Have a spectacular weekend – wherever you find yourself.
