You may have noticed, at Spruce, we are huge fans of the weekend 🙂

Part of our blog-mantra is about creating a space to inspire and elevate everyday life. And while we do our very best to fully embrace the mantra, the weekly grind of Corporate jobs, healthy eating and (attempts at) staying fit are not always as exciting as the weekend – particularly one which involves a long weekend away, and a wedding.

This past weekend was one such example; good friends of mine got married at the Rose Barn (what a stunning venue!) outside of St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape.

(In case you are wondering, the dress I am wearing is from YDE – I picked it up on sale for R100! Besides the beautiful colour and flattering cut, the dress has two long straps which can be wrapped in various ways making it so versatile and great for most events)

St Francis Bay is about an 80-minute drive from Port Elizabeth, and perhaps, one of my favourite local holidays spots. With this in mind, my husband and I left Joburg on Thursday afternoon and by 7pm were sipping a glass of wine around the braai, the smell of milkwood tingling in my nose.

I spent many a December holiday in St Francis – as a teenager, a young adult and more recently, as ‘grown up’ with my husband and family. To me, St Francis feels like a distant relative; a little bit older than last time, but filled with the same warm embrace.

Given the persistent rain in Jo’burg lately it was a wonderful, and welcome, surprise to be greeted by a glorious weather on both Friday and Saturday, perfect for enhancing the (self) tan. While much of the beach has washed away in recent years, the outlook from the beach is still beautiful and the notorious Bay winds were low on both days.

By Saturday afternoon, however, the Easterly wind had picked up and brought with it a rainy Sunday (again… I can’t seem to get away from it at the moment!). Sunday was spent lazing on the couches, recovering from a great party at the wedding, while the soft rain fell from grey skies onto grey water.

To me, the best way to stay in St Francis is to rent a holiday house. We stayed directly opposite the beach for 3 nights, falling asleep to the crashing waves, and the last night on the canals – the Little Venice of South Africa. I love both but the beach is always a little more special…

We will be returning in a month to spend Christmas with my family – and after such a relaxing break – I absolutely can’t wait for the Christmas weekend!
